Both the Palisade and Outlander have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Palisade has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Outlander’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Hyundai Palisade’s rear backup camera has a standard washer for maintaining a clear view under various conditions. In contrast, the Mitsubishi Outlander does not offer a rear camera washer, meaning its effectiveness relies on manual cleaning by the user when necessary.

Both the Palisade and Outlander have rear cross-traffic warning, but the Palisade has Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Outlander’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Palisade and the Outlander have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, front seat center airbag, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The Hyundai Palisade weighs 517 to 1191 pounds more than the Mitsubishi Outlander. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

The Palisade’s 7 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the Outlander runs out after 100,000 miles.

Hyundai pays for scheduled maintenance on the Palisade for 1 year and 6000 miles longer than Mitsubishi pays for maintenance for the Outlander (3/36,000 vs. 2/30,000).

There are almost 3 times as many Hyundai dealers as there are Mitsubishi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Palisade’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are better in initial quality than Mitsubishi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in initial quality, above the industry average. With 49 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mitsubishi is ranked 25th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Mitsubishi With 34 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Hyundai higher than Mitsubishi.

Engine

The Palisade’s standard 3.5 DOHC V6 produces 106 more horsepower (287 vs. 181) and 79 lbs.-ft. more torque (260 vs. 181) than the Outlander’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder. The Palisade’s optional 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 148 more horsepower (329 vs. 181) and 158 lbs.-ft. more torque (339 vs. 181) than the Outlander’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Palisade’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The Outlander doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Palisade Hybrid’s standard fuel tank has 3.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Outlander (18.2 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Palisade V6’s standard fuel tank has 4.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Outlander (19 vs. 14.5 gallons).

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Palisade Calligraphy’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Outlander (265/45R21 vs. 255/45R20).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Palisade Calligraphy has standard 21-inch wheels. The Outlander’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Palisade V6 has a standard space-saver spare (not available on Hybrid) so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Outlander; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The Palisade has a standard automatic rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Outlander doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The Palisade’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Outlander doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Palisade’s wheelbase is 10.4 inches longer than on the Outlander (116.9 inches vs. 106.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Palisade is 4.8 inches wider in the front and 4.8 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Outlander.

Passenger Space

The Palisade offers optional seating for 8 passengers; the Outlander can only carry 7.

The Palisade has 36.4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Outlander (161.9 vs. 125.5).

The Palisade has .9 inches more front headroom, 2.5 inches more front legroom, 4.8 inches more front hip room, 3.5 inches more front shoulder room, 1.6 inches more rear headroom, 3.1 inches more rear legroom, 3.4 inches more rear hip room, 5.1 inches more rear shoulder room, 3.3 inches more third row headroom, 13.4 inches more third row legroom, 3.2 inches more third row hip room and 4.4 inches more third row shoulder room than the Outlander.

The Palisade’s cargo area provides more volume than the Outlander.

Both the Palisade and the Outlander have standard second row automatic folding seats. The Palisade Limited/Calligraphy’s third row seats also fold up or down at the press of a button. The Outlander doesn’t offer automatic folding third row seats.

Towing

The Palisade’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Outlander’s (5000 vs. 2000 pounds).

Servicing Ease

The Palisade uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Outlander uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

Ergonomics

The power windows standard on both the Palisade and the Outlander have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Palisade is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Outlander prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Palisade’s standard front power windows open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Outlander’s standard passenger windows don’t open or close automatically. The Palisade Calligraphy’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches.

On a hot day the Palisade’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Outlander can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Palisade’s standard Proximity Key allows you to unlock the doors from either front door handle, open the cargo door, and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Pushbutton Start standard on the Outlander only offers hands-free access for the ignition, none to unlock the vehicle. Pushbutton Start is not available on the Outlander SE/SEL/Platinum.

The Palisade’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Outlander’s power window, power lock and power mirror switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Palisade’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Mitsubishi only offers heated mirrors on the Outlander SE/SEL/Platinum.

The Palisade SEL/XRT/Limited/Calligraphy/Hybrid’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Outlander has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The Palisade SEL/XRT/Limited/Calligraphy/Hybrid has standard heated front seats and second and third row heated seats also avaiable, which keep the driver and passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Mitsubishi doesn’t offer heated seats in the third row of the Outlander.

The Palisade SEL Premium/XRT/Limited/Calligraphy/Hybrid has standard front air conditioned seats and the Palisade SEL Premium/Limited/Calligraphy/Hybrid also has them in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Outlander doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Palisade Calligraphy has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Outlander.

The Palisade XRT PRO/Limited/Calligraphy has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Outlander doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Palisade Calligraphy’s Remote Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Outlander doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

The Hyundai Palisade outsold the Mitsubishi Outlander by over two to one during 2024.
